GULF SHORES, ALA. – Battling high winds, isolated rain showers and formidable opponents from Georgia State, Pepperdine’s Caitlin Racich and Lara Dykstra fell in the first round of the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Pairs National Championship.

Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union/Nebraska) were announced as AVCA All-Americans yesterday after the team final.

Their first round opponents, Katie Madewell and fellow All-American Lane Carico, got off to a blazing start in set one, 8-0. Racich and Dykstra had a difficult time adjusting to the high wind gusts and suffered a 21-15 setback in the opening frame.

Although Pepperdine’s No. 2 pair began to find their rhythm late in set two, it was a case of too little too late and the Panthers advanced with a 21-19 win.

Despite the loss, Racich and Dykstra finish the 2013 season with a 24-5 overall record.

Last season, Racich took home the pairs championship title alongside Summer Ross.

Pepperdine finished runner-up in yesterday’s team championship and concludes the 2013 season with a 20-1 record.

The Waves expect to return at least eight members of this year’s squad to the 2014 roster, and have so far signed two sand-only players for next year including Delaney Knudson and Kendahl Hettick. Several incoming freshman on Pepperdine’s indoor volleyball team are also expected to contribute.
