Scribner Shines on Day One of USD Beach Cup
Waves sit in fourth place after the first day of the USD Beach Cup.

SAN DIEGO – Senior diver Kristin Scribner of the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team placed second in the 3-meter during the opening day of the USD Beach Cup – the Waves’ first competition in nearly two months. Action resumes tomorrow as Pepperdine continues to compete against San Diego, Fresno State and Loyola Marymount.
Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) was awarded a second-place score of 228.40 in the 3-meter diving competition to score seven points for the Waves’ overall team total.
It was the senior’s fourth top-three finish in the 3-meter of the season.
Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) followed with a 187.85 to finish in fifth, and Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) finished just behind her in sixth place with a score of 172.20.
In the 200 medley relay, Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Kelly Corso (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS), Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Brooke Hawley (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) teamed up to clock the team’s best time of the season in the event with a 1:56.69 – good enough for an eighth-place finish.
The relay team comprised of Ashlie Benson (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS), Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS), Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) and Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) reached the wall next in ninth place behind a time of 1:58.47.
Adkins was the first Wave to complete the 500 freestyle, stopping the clock at the 5:23.30 mark. Other Pepperdine representatives in the race were Benson (5:50.03), Andrea Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS ) (6:04.83), Fugate (6:16.95, season best) and Gina Vrablik (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy ) (6:46.82), who all finished in succession.
Seven Waves competed in the 50 freestyle sprint, led by Hawley with a time of 26.09. Hawley was followed by Barragan (26.45) Jordan Shaner (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS) (26.72), Ertl (26.90), Cailey Stuebner (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS) (29.92), Kelsey Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pelham Memorial HS) (30.82) and Phyllis Reffo (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS/Santa Monica College), who lowered her season-best time to 33.07.
Adkins, Benson, Burris and Krall placed seventh in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing the race in a time of 8:25.23, while Barragan, Ginger Jacobsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS), Ertl and Corso took eighth after clocking an 8:51.85.
Through six events, Pepperdine sits in fourth place with 27 points. Action at the USD Beach Cup concludes tomorrow.
