Waves End Day One of Mustang Invitational with Three Race Wins

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Day one of the two-day Mustang Invitational was a success for the Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team. Jessica Mosbaugh won both the 50 and 100 breaststroke, while Kristine Pataray claimed victory in the 50 freestyle.

Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) has now won eight races this season, already the highest win total of any Wave swimmer in recent history. In the 50 breaststroke, the sophomore won by over a second with a mark of 30.68.

The 100 breaststroke was owned by the Pepperdine standout, who beat her closest competitor to the wall by over five seconds. With a final time of 1:06.22, Mosbaugh collected her third win of the season in the event.

Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS) was just behind her, lowering her season-best time in the 100 breaststroke to 1:12.74 for fifth place.

Pataray (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills HS) won the 50 freestyle for the second time in 2013, bringing her season win tally to three overall. The freshman hit the wall in a time of 24.91, edging Liz Jacobs of Cal Poly by just seven one-hundredths of a second.

In the women's 1-meter springboard, Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) and Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) both placed in the top-three with season-best scores of 202.60 and 199.40, respectively.

Emily Parks (San Antonio, Texas/Communications Arts HS) made the podium in the 1,650 freestyle, pacing Pepperdine with a time of18:31.30. She followed that with a runner-up performance in the 100 backstroke (1:02.26).



The Waves continue action at the Mustang Invitational on Saturday.
