Pepperdine Sits in Second After Day One of Cal Poly Invitational
Waves score 509 points on day one to finish the day in second place.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Behind 16 top-five finishes, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team finished day one of the Cal Poly Invitational in second place. Courtney VanWinkle, Sarah Burris, Nicolette Barreiro and Allison Naasz accounted for the Waves’ best finish of the day with a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.
Pepperdine scored 509 points on day one to place ahead of Azusa Pacific and Concordia-Irvine. The Mustangs hold on to the top spot after day one with 1,092 points.
VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS), Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) and Naasz (Lodi Calif./Tokay HS) clocked a season-best time of 1:42.24 to hit the wall second in the 200 freestyle relay to end the day.
Fellow Waves Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College), Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Elizabeth Pitts (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) and Kelly Corso (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS) were equally impressive in the race, placing sixth behind a time of 1:46.93.
Jessie Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) individually tallied three top-10 finishes, including top-three performances in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes. Her time of 32.05 at the 50 yard distance was the freshman’s best non-split time of the season. In the 400 IM, Mosbaugh placed sixth with a mark of 4:44.85.
Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) lowered her personal-record in the 400 IM, registering a time of 5:00.22 to place ninth. She also was the second Wave behind Mosbaugh in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes, recording times of 33.19 and 1:13.16, respectively.
Adkins shaved over 10 seconds off her season-best time in the 500 freestyle, hitting the wall in a fourth-place mark of 5:16.67. The senior also paced Pepperdine in the 200 backstroke, placing third in a sub-two minute time of 1:58.68.
Barreiro logged two top-10 finishes individually. In the 50 fly she posted a time of 27.53 to place fourth and finished eighth in the 100 fly behind a time of 1:00.93.
Divers Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS), Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) and Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) all placed in the top-10 in the 1-meter springboard. Strampel led the way with 212.15 points to place fourth followed by Korver’s 200.30 to finish fifth. Ertl scored 130.00 points to place ninth.
In the 3-meter, Strampel earned a fifth-place finish (187.80) followed by Korver in seventh (158.55).
The Waves continue action at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday.
