Waves Finish Opening Day of Arena Classic
Swimmers rise to challenge at Arena Classic with 12 season-best times.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swim team set 13 new season-best times, including three personal records, on the opening day of the Arena Classic. The annual meet brings together hundreds of college student-athletes together at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool where the Waves have historically swam well.
All six of Pepperdine’s racers entered in the 200 IM lowered her season-best time today. Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was the first Wave to hit the wall with a time of 2:13.67. Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) followed with a personal record performance of 2:16.23.
Following Naasz, Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) and Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS) clocked their best times in a Wave uniform with marks of 2:18.17 and 2:26.26, respectively.
Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) lowered her season-best time to 2:30.31, and Katie Giacobbe (Duluth, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School) registered a time of 2:34.29 to round out the Waves’ representation in the event.
In the highly competitive 50 freestyle sprint, Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) delivered a time of 25.44 to pace the Waves. Naasz set her second PR of the day, and finished the race in a time of 25.74.
Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) was the third Pepperdine swimmer to reach the wall and did so in a time of 26.14.
Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) swam her best 50 freestyle race of the season (26.90), followed by personal-record setting performances courtesy of Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS) and Amanda Rowe (Reno, Nev./McQueen HS) in respective times of 26.95 and 27.17.
Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) led the Waves in the 500 freestyle, delivering a performance of 5:25.10.
The 200 freestyle relay team comprised of VanWinkle, Mosbaugh, Barreiro and Naasz delivered the Waves’ fastest time of the season with a mark of 1:41.67. Van Winkle led off with a time of 25.18 followed by Mosbaugh’s season-best split of 24.78. Barreiro swam the third leg in a time of 26-flat, while Naasz anchored the team with a swim of 25.71.
The Arena Invite continues tomorrow and runs through Saturday.
