Swimmers Continue to Improve at Arena Invitational
Pepperdine continues to improve upon season-best times at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – On day two of the Arena Invitational, the Pepperdine women’s swimming squad continued to deliver some of the year’s best performances. In the six different events competed in, at least one Wave swimmer clocked her best time of the season.
In the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Brooke Hawley (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS), Kelly Corso (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS) and Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) posted a time of 1:57.79.
Adkins led off with season-best 50 backstroke mark of 29.85, followed by a 50 breaststroke time of 33.89 courtesy of Hawley. Corso swam the 50 butterfly leg in a split time of 28.10 before Barragan brought it home with a 50 freestyle time of 25.95.
Barragan’s time was her second sub-26 second 50 freestyle race of the season. Yesterday, the junior set a personal record with a time of 25.91.
In the 400 IM, Ginger Jacobsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) clocked a 5:12.53 – nearly six second faster than her time at last weekend’s Cal Poly Shootout.
Ashlie Benson (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS), Brooke Fugate (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) and Jordan Shaner (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS) all represented Pepperdine in the 200 freestyle. Benson was the first to the wall, stopping the clock at the 2:06.11 mark, followed by Shaner who recorded a season-best time of 2:10.67. Fugate posted a time of 2:22.09.
In the 100 breaststroke, Hawley, Shaner and Kelsey Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pelham Memorial HS) all established new season-best times. Hawley finished the race with a time of 1:15.10, just a little more than a second shy of her personal-best split time of 1:13.35. With times of 1:19.43 and 1:30.00, respectively, Shaner and Maguire also improved on their prior performances.
Corso finished first in the race for the Waves, after clocking a 1:13.95.
In the final race of the day for Pepperdine, the 100 backstroke, three Waves posted sub-1:10 times. Benson moved up on the performances list with a time of 1:05.82, while Jacobsen improved her season-best time of 1:08.20. Ertl was the third swimmer from Pepperdine to complete the event, with a time of 1:09.46.
