LONG BEACH, Calif. – Competing against the finest athletes across the NCAA and even the world, the Pepperdine swim team rose to the occasion handed in a total 45 new season-best times across three days at the Arena Classic.

“What a great way to finish up the first semester. We competed against teams with amazing depth and speed and with tremendous experience,” said head coach Nick Rodionoff. “But the ladies went out there with no fear and did their absolute best. This gives us a lot of positive momentum heading into the second half of the season.”

To open the day, 11 Waves swam in the 100 freestyle. Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) finished in a blinding time of 55.00 to lead Pepperdine, followed by Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) with a season-best time of 55.39. Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) also clocked a sub-56 second time with a final mark of 55.71.

Also in the 100 freestyle, Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) handed in a time of 58.68. Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS), Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and Amanda Rowe (Reno, Nev./McQueen HS) also came in under the one-minute mark. Witham recorded a time of 58.98 (personal best), followed by Ertl with a 59.47 (personal best) and Rowe with a 59.58 (season best).

In the 200 breaststroke, Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) clocked a 2:28.97, followed by Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) with a time of 2:38.01.

Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) led the Waves in both the 200 butterfly and 1,650 freestyle. VanWinkle set season-best times in the pair of events, first with a 2:14.29 in the 200 butterfly and then posted a team-best time of 18:28.86 in the distance swim.
