MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team heads back to the pool for the first time in 2012 with the USD Beach Cup on Jan. 20-21. In addition to the Waves, the meet brings together the hosting Toreros, along with Fresno State and PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount.
The two-day meet, which features both swimming and diving events, is one of two remaining meets before Pepperdine competes at the 2012 PCSC Championships on Feb. 8-12 in La Mirada, Calif.
Action at the USD Sports Center Pool begins at 1:30 p.m. on Friday starting with the 200 medley relay, followed by the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay. The 3-meter diving will also be contested on Friday and will take place at UC San Diego.
Saturday will be divided into two sessions with the first beginning at 10 a.m. Session two’s slate includes the 200 freestyle relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay and 1-meter diving (at USD). The final session features the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
The Waves and the Lions will be competing for a point in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup, a year-long rivalry competition between the two schools. Currently Pepperdine holds a two-point lead over LMU.
The last time out, at the Arena Classic, Pepperdine swimmers set over two dozen new season-best times and will look to build upon that success this weekend in San Diego. Although it’s been two months since the last time the Waves competed, the student-athletes have been hard at work in the weight room and with two-a-day swim workouts.
Headlining the 2011 diving highlight’s was Leslie Wade’s (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) performance at Cal Poly Shootout last November when the senior qualified for the NCAA Regional Zone meet in the 1-meter after scoring a 257.20.
