MALIBU, Calif. – Although the #33 Pepperdine women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to fifth-ranked Stanford today, the Waves made several significant strides in both singles and doubles. Headlining the afternoon was sophomore Lorraine Guillermo, who defeated the defending 2012 NCAA Singles Champion, and senior Khunpak Issara with a win against the nation’s #2-ranked singles player.

The Cardinal (3-0) won the doubles point, but it was not without a challenge.

Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), ranked #4 in the ITA doubles poll, made short work of Nicole Gibbs and Kristie Ahn, posting an 8-2 decision in the top match.

Although the Stanford pair is not ranked, Gibbs is a highly touted doubles player as evidence by her 2012 NCAA Doubles Champion trophy which she won alongside now graduated Mallory Burdette. It was Gibbs and Burdette who defeated Issara and Guillermo during the quarterfinals of last season’s doubles championship.

Natalie Dillon and Krista Hardebeck evened the playing field on court three, defeating Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Tara Panu (Los Altos Hills, Calif./The Harker School), 8-5.

Although Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) were down 1-7 versus Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay, the Wave tandem claimed five-straight games to comeback within one. Pepperdine was stopped there, however, and Tan and Tsay won 8-6 to clinch the doubles point.

Stanford took full control of the match in singles, proving worthy of its top-five ranking. The Cardinal claimed victories on courts four, five and six to secure the dual victory.

Despite the team loss, the three Waves left on the courts fought diligently.

Although Issara had a difficult time in the opening set, she rebounded with a 6-4 triumph in set two against #2-ranked Hardebeck. With the dual decided, the opponents competed in a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner. Issara emerged victorious, 10-6, and is now 3-4 against ranked singles opponents this season. Hardebeck is by far the highest ranked player Issara has bested in her career.

Gibbs, who was also the 2012 NCAA Singles Champion, and Guillermo battled game-for-game in a marathon first set on court one.

With Guillermo up 6-5 and serving, the two were stuck at deuce for nearly 10 minutes before Guillermo finally secured the hold to win 7-5. With momentum on her side, the #104-ranked Guillermo rolled to a 6-1 triumph in set two to improve to 9-2 (2-1 in duals) this season.

In the final match to finish, Granillo came up short in the first set tiebreaker to Ahn and was unable to recover. Ahn won the second set 6-0 to give Stanford its fifth and final point.

The Waves (0-3) look to put a tally in the win column tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 10. Pepperdine goes up against #65 UC Irvine at 1 p.m. on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
