Waves Battle to the Finish at ITA National Team Indoors

MADISON, Wis. – After a tough battle at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Monday, the No. 6 Pepperdine women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 5 North Carolina to finish as runners-up at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

The Waves (6-1) fell in doubles to open, but battled in singles against the Tar Heels (10-0) with close matches on all courts. No. 27 Ashley Lahey and Evgeniya Levashova each downed top-10 ranked opponents in singles.

The Waves struck first in doubles action as Evgeniya Levashova and Dzina Milovanovic collected a 6-2 win over No. 20 Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford on court two. The opposition then tied things up with a 6-2 win of their own on court three, leaving all eyes on the No. 1 position. Ashley Lahey and Mayar Sherif went neck-and-neck against No. 30 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham to the 5-5 mark, but the Tar Heels were able to clinch the point on top of a 7-5 doubles win.

Facing the deficit, the Waves came out strong in singles winning first sets on three courts. Levashova stunned her opponent on court three with a 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 10 Makenna Jones to even the score 1-1. UNC then picked up wins on court four and two to pull ahead 3-1 and face clinching opportunity.

No. 27 Lahey picked up an upset of her own to start to close the gap, defeating No. 6 Alle Sanford with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win in the No. 1 position. The Tar Heels ended the match by clinching on court five with a three-set bout to close the match.
