Pepperdine improves to 2-0 in WCC action.
March 22, 2014
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Despite competing without two lineup regulars, the #36 Pepperdine women's tennis team held off #72 Santa Clara, 4-2. The Waves swept the doubles point before Ale Granillo, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and Danielle Feneridis all won in singles to put their team out of reach.
With the team win, Pepperdine improves to 8-4 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in the West Coast Conference. It was the first league loss for the Broncos, who fall to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) partnered with Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) in the absence of her regular doubles counterpart, Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul). Capannolo was also without her normal doubles partner, as Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) was unable to make the trip due to illness.
Despite not having played with one another since the 2012-13 season, Granillo and Capannolo got the Waves started on the right foot with a decisive 8-2 triumph over Delphine Rouvillois and Nicolette Wolny.
In their first appearance in the dual lineup together, Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) and Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga (Bangkok, Thailand/International School Bangkok) rose to the occasion and put away an 8-5 decision vs. Stephanie Skaras and Elaine Chesoni to clinch the doubles point for Pepperdine.
It was Feneridis and Salirathavibhaga's first doubles win together.
In singles, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) delivered a solid straight-set victory over Skaras to extend the Waves' lead to 2-0.
Although the Waves' ace, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), suffered a narrow 7-5, 6-4 loss to Katie Le, sophomoreDanielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) and senior Granillo picked her up by both earning three-set wins to set Pepperdine apart.
Playing in the No. 2 slot for the first time since sophomore season, Granillo fell by a single break to Delphine Rouvillois in the opening frame before controlling the remainder of the match to win 6-1, 6-1.
Granillo is 7-4 in duals this year, playing mostly from the No. 3 position.
After splitting sets with Elaine Chesoni, Feneridis broke serve early in the third set and rode the momentum to a 6-2 triumph.
It was Feneridis' first singles win in dual action this season.
Chelby Cooke posted Santa Clara's second point of the day with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Capannolo.
