PORTLAND – The #29 Pepperdine women’s tennis team made it nine in a row with today’s 7-0 shutout over Portland. The Waves return to Malibu with a 13-4 record including a perfect 6-0 mark in West Coast Conference play.

Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) was the star of Pepperdine’s Tour de Pacific Northwest. The freshman allowed just three total games in her three singles matches against players from Washington State, Gonzaga and Portland.

Today inside the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center, Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) set the tone for the Waves, shutting out Saroop Dhatt and Marina Reimers, 8-0.

Although Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) suffered their first loss in dual play, Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Chiang picked them up on court two. Capannolo and Chiang, ranked #62 in the ITA doubles rankings, outlasted Maja Mladenovic and Tori Troesch, 7-1, in the tiebreaker to clinch the point for Pepperdine.

With just three courts available, the top half of the singles lineup played first.

Cutura took care of business on court two, posting a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Sophie van den Aarseen.

Playing at No. 3, Granillo rallied back from a 1-4 deficit in set one to win 6-4 against Jelena Lazarevic. With momentum on her side, the senior cruised to a 6-2 triumph in the second to tally the Waves’ third team point of the day.

Although Guillermo dropped the opening frame to Mladenovic, the Waves’ ace bounced back to win 6-1, 6-4 and put Pepperdine out of reach.

Chiang continued her dominance, owning a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Troesch. The rookie opened the week with a 6-0, 6-0 win at Washington State, followed by 6-0, 6-1 win at Gonzaga on Friday.

At No. 4, Capannolo edged Dhatt 6-3, 7-5, while Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in the second set tiebreaker versus Reimers.

The Waves return to Malibu next weekend to host Pacific on Friday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. Then, it’s a showdown versus preseason favorite Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 12. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
