#28 Pepperdine Blanks #43 Saint Mary's, Remains Atop WCC Standings
#27 Lorraine Guillermo hands #10 Jenny Jullien just her second loss of the dual season, and first in conference play.
April 12, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – The #28 Pepperdine women’s tennis team marched one step closer to clinching the 2014 West Coast Conference regular-season title, shutting out #43 Saint Mary’s 4-0 today at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Additionally, Lorraine Guillermo won today’s battle between the league’s top-two ranked players, defeating 2013 WCC Player of the Year Jenny Jullien in straight sets.
With their 11th win in row, the Waves are now 15-4 on the season, as well as a perfect 8-0 in league matches.
The battle for the doubles point was a heated one on all three courts. #72-ranked Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) fell behind a break early against Jade Frampton and Danielle Flores, but quickly found themselves back on serve, 3-3. After Chiang held serve, the pair was able to earn their second-straight break to take a 5-3 lead. After holding serve all the way to a 7-4 advantage, the duo broke one last time to put away the match 8-4.
Meanwhile on court three, Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) were deadlocked with Catherine Leduc and Jamie Pawid. After climbing ahead 7-4, the Gaels won back-to-back games and threatened the send the match to a tiebreaker. Granillo squashed the comeback, however, and held serve to win 8-6 and secure the doubles point for Pepperdine.
The pair is now a team-best 11-2 in duals this season.
Runglerdkriangkrai got the Waves rolling in singles, quickly putting away a 6-1, 6-1 triumph vs. Parminder Kaur on court six.
Playing at No. 5, Chiang bounced Frampton 6-1 in the opening frame before avoiding a third set with a 7-5 win in the second set tiebreaker.
Guillermo, currently ranked #27, battled against #10 Jullien – the top ranked player in the WCC – on court one. After owning the first set to the tune of a 6-2 win, Guillermo surged ahead 5-2 in the second stanza. Although Jullien got a break back on the junior, Guillermo served out the set 6-4 to clinch the dual for Pepperdine.
The series between the two aces in now tied at 2-2. Jullien won the regular season meeting in 2013, as well as the fall match up at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. Guillermo, a 2014 WCC Player of the Year candidate, clinched the conference tournament title with a win over Jullien last April.
Although she did not finish her match, Capannolo remained diligent today in singles despite falling behind early. The sophomore fought back from a 1-4 deficit vs. #111-ranked Leduc to win the first set 7-5 in the tiebreaker. Capannolo was up 3-0 in the second when action was suspended.
In an exhibition match, Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) topped Elizabeth Searl, 8-5.
Pepperdine, with an 8-0 home record in 2014, concludes the regular season at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Wednesday, April 16 vs. Loyola Marymount (7-12, 1-5 WCC). Senior Day will be celebrated, honoring the career of four-year standout Granillo. A win vs. the Lions would mark just the second time in program history the Waves have gone undefeated at home in a single season.
