Waves Capture WCC Regular Season Title on Senior Day
Ale Granillo clinches the 4-0 win over LMU on Senior Day.
April 16, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – The #23 Pepperdine women’s tennis team put the finishing touches on the 2014 regular season, topping Loyola Marymount to end the year with a perfect 9-0 conference record. Although the Waves had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, today’s victory clinched sole possession of the WCC Regular-Season Championship.
The win – the Waves’ 12th in a row -- moves the team to a perfect 9-0 record at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this season, marking just the second year in program history Pepperdine was undefeated at home.
Senior Day for Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) was celebrated prior to the match and fittingly enough, it was Granillo who clinched the dual for the Waves.
“I would see my older teammates on Senior Day and it seemed so far away for me,” reflected Granillo, “But now that my time is here, I’m really happy. I’m ready to be done, I’m happy to be done and I think there is no better way to finish my time here than like this.
“There is so much going on right now with finals and graduation and everything is happening so fast,” Granillo continued, “I got to really enjoy this moment today and my teammates are the main reason for that. They are so supportive. They have been like my sisters in every aspect of my life, on the court, off the court. They have given me so much. Because of them, and Gualberto and Cintia and all my other coaches, I feel like I was home here.”
Granillo was brilliant in doubles, teaming with Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) to shut out Kristine Kouyoumijia and Reka Rohonyi, 8-0. The pair ends the regular season with a team-best 12-2 record in dual action.
#74-ranked Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), the Waves’ No. 2 pair, closed out an 8-5 decision over Lauri Mueller and Ellie Grossman to secure the doubles point for the home team.
Pepperdine was off and running in singles, taking the first set in five of the six matches.
Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) quickly put the Waves’ first singles win of the day in the books, downing Kristine Kouyoumijia 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 match.
Playing in the No. 6 spot in the lineup, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) won her seventh straight with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Grossman.
Granillo, playing at No. 2 today, posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory versus Jessica Perez in her final collegiate match at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center – barring any hosting privileges the Waves might enjoy in the postseason.
Pepperdine, locked in as the No. 1 seed, will open play at the WCC Tournament on Friday, April 25 in the semifinals.
