URBANA, Ill. – Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team fell in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship today at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois. Although the sophomore made an early exit in her first singles championship appearance, Guillermo made a bit of history as the first Wave to earn a spot in the 64-person draw since the 2007 season.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) has picked up numerous awards for her contributions this year. She was voted the 2013 ITA Southwest Regional Player to Watch and also was an All-West Coast Conference first team performer in both singles and doubles.
Currently ranked #32 in singles, Guillermo went up against #35 Kata Szekely of Tennessee. Szekely edged Guillermo 6-4 in the opening frame before taking set two 6-2.
Guillermo finishes the singles portion of her sophomore campaign with a 20-12 overall record.
The championships aren’t over for Guillermo, however. She’ll team up with Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) for the NCAA Doubles Championship starting tomorrow, May 23. Ranked #17 as a pair, the duo will take on Virginia’s Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi.
Although Nauta and Xi are ranked below Guillermo and Issara at #32, the Cavaliers defeated the Waves last fall, 7-5, 6-2, in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.
Issara and Guillermo are 20-5 overall this season and have won their last 11 matches in a row. Against ranked opponents, they boast a 6-2 record.
Match times for tomorrow will be announced later this evening. For links to live stats and video, stay tuned to the 2013 NCAA Tournament Central.
