#17 Issara and Guillermo Stopped by #5 Szekely and Boren at NCAA Doubles Championship
Issara and Guillermo's season comes a close, but not before setting the doubles career winning percentage Pepperdine record.
May 24, 2013
URBANA, Ill. – One of the greatest doubles pairs in Pepperdine history concluded their final season together today at the NCAA Doubles Championship. #17-ranked Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo fell to Tennessee’s #5 Kata Szekely and Brynn Boren in the round of 16.
The Waves, 21-6 overall this season, fought back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win 6-3 in the second. Up 5-4 and serving for the match in the third, the Pepperdine pair was unable to put the match away. Back on serve, 5-5, the Lady Volunteers took back momentum of the match and won 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Despite the loss, Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) have etched their names into the program’s history books. Their career dual season record of 33-6 (.846) not only ranks third for number of wins, but counts as the best winning percentage of any pair in the Waves’ recorded history.
Issara and Guillermo reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship last season and earned ITA All-American status. Last fall, the pair won the back draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship and proceeded to reach the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Including both tournament and dual play, the Pepperdine tandem pieced together a 45-11 record.
In singles, both have been successful for the Waves. Guillermo was the 2012 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, and reached as high as #31 in the singles rankings this year as a sophomore.
Issara, a senior in her final year with Pepperdine, went 21-2 in duals this season and finished her singles career on an active 18-match win streak. Her career dual-season singles tally stands at 55, just two wins shy of breaking into the program’s top-10 – an impressive feat considering she only played three seasons with the Waves.
The Pepperdine women’s tennis team will return to action next fall to begin the 2013-14 campaign.
