Guillermo Wins Singles Title at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
Lorraine Guillermo opens junior season with a tournament win in Midland, Texas.
Sept. 15, 2014
MIDLAND, Texas – Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team capped off a brilliant opening weekend by winning the singles title on the third and final day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. She becomes the second Wave in as many tries to win the crown.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), ranked #29 in singles, went up against two ranked opponents today, both of whom she had fallen short against in prior seasons. Today the junior was able to change up her game plan and adapt as the match progressed to walk away with the two ‘Ws.’
“It is so rewarding for a coach to see a player learn how to beat another player who has beaten her before,” remarked head coach Gualberto Escudero. “Lorraine lost to Natalie (Beazant) at the NCAA Championship last spring and to Stefanie (Tan) at this tournament a few years ago.
“She was a much different player out there today. She remained calm and no matter how far behind she was, she always found a way to come back.”
Guillermo faced #21-ranked Natalie Beazant of Rice in the semifinals today. The last time the two aces met was during the first round of the 2013 NCAA Team Championship. Beazant got the upper hand last time around, 6-2, 6-2.
Today was a fierce battle on both sides of the net, as each player took a set 7-5. Although Beazant went ahead 5-3 in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, Guillermo surged forward and won 12-10.
In the finals, Guillermo took on #30 Stefanie Tan, who she had lost to twice prior.
Again, Guillermo was not fazed by her history with her finals opponent and forced Tan to a tiebreaker after splitting sets, 4-6, 6-4.
The Wave jumped ahead early in the tiebreaker and rode the momentum to a 10-6 win to claim the title.
“Heading into this tournament, my game plan was to simply play more relaxed and to just improve throughout the weekend,” said Guillermo after the victory. “Winning wasn’t exactly the goal, but it was a result of sticking with my game plan.
“I was also thrilled I got the opportunity to redeem myself against a pair of opponents that I didn’t play my best tennis against the last time I faced them. I’m happy with this weekend’s result but hope to build upon it as we make our way through the fall tournaments in preparation for the dual season.”
The last time Pepperdine traveled to this tournament in Midland, Texas was during the 2011 fall season when Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) won the singles draw.
The Waves are back in action Sept. 27-29 at the San Diego State Fall Classic.
