SAN DIEGO – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team continued play today at the SDSU Fall Classic. Notching wins for the Waves were Danielle Feneridis, Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga, Miquela Newhart and the doubles team of Michaela Capannolo and Feneridis. Additionally, Matea Cutura picked up a win in prequalifying at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship.
Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) battled in a fiercely competive opening round match at the ITA All-American Championship on the campus of UCLA.
Although the sophomore dropped her first set 6-3 to Despoina Vogasari of Houston, the sophomore rebounded in the second set, 6-4. In the third and deciding frame, Cutura found herself down 0-3 before getting the break of serve back and forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6. Down 4-5 in the first-to-seven tiebreaker, the Wave rallied off three unanswered points to win 7-5 and advance to the next round.
“It was a fun match to play. Despoina was a very fair player with a tough forehand,” said Cutura after the match. “After falling behind 0-3 in the third set, I started hitting more aggressively and going for my shots.”
“Matea played a very smart match and was able to adjust her game to stay with an opponent who is a very tough baseline and mid-court player,” said volunteer assistant coach Nina Eriksson. “At the end, Matea played some very aggressive points to close out the tiebreaker. The level of play throughout the match was high from both players.”
In round two, Cutura got the upper hand on Baylor's Victoria Kisialeva, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"It took me a set to figure out her heave top spin forehand an dher lefty serve," commented Cutura. "I made too many mistakes on the first and second shot. Inthe second and third sets, I opened up the court better and was able to set up better put away shots. I'm very happy with my two matches today."
Cutura needs one more wins to earn a spot in the Riviera/ITA All-American qualification draw, which will take place Oct. 1-2 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Meanwhile in San Diego, Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS), competing in the White Singles Draw, defeated Elanor Grossman of Loyola Marymount, 6-0, 6-3 for her first win of the young season. The sophomore will take on Annemieke Witte from New Mexico State in the consolation championship tomorrow.
In the Gold Singles Draw, Salirathavibhaga (Bangkok, Thailand/International School Bangkok) earned her first victory of the year by defeating Janine Koleta from the University of San Diego 7-5, 6-4. She will also compete in the consolation championship tomorrow against Julia Norlin from LMU.
Also competing in the consolation championship tomorrow will be the doubles team of Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Feneridis. They took down the team of Laura Mueller and Julia Norlin of LMU 8-4 in the Black Doubles Draw. Tomorrow they will battle the team of Brittany Collens and Ashvarya Shrivastava from NMSU.
Suffering loses in singles competition for Pepperdine today was Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy), Michaela Capannolo and the doubles team of Runglerdkriangkrai and Salirathavibhaga.
The women’s tennis team concludes the SDSU Fall Classic on Sunday. Prequalifying also continues tomorrow at UCLA. In addition to Cutura’s singles matches, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) begin doubles prequalifying.
