FLUSHING, N.Y. – Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team were victorious yet again today at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship. The Waves won their third match in two days to advance to the semifinals.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) won an exciting match against Tennessee’s Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely. Although Boren and Szekely were the tournament’s No. 2 seed and favorited to move on, Issara and Guillermo powered through to fight off match point and win 9-7.
The Pepperdine pair will face Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi of Virginia in tomorrow’s semifinal. The Cavaliers are ranked #41 in the ITA preseason doubles poll.
Doubles pairs from USC and Alabama make up the other two semifinalists.
Also competing this weekend were Tara Panu (Los Alamitos, Calif./The Harker School) and Abigail Phillips (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) at the Jack Kramer Club Invitational in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. Against tough competition from UCLA, San Diego and UC Santa Barbara, Panu and Phillips lost their first round matches in both singles and doubles.
The pair will resume action in the consolation draw tomorrow.
