MALIBU, Calif. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its preseason team, singles and doubles rankings today and the Pepperdine men’s tennis team came in at #13, while the women’s squad will start the dual season ranked #48. Additionally, several individuals earned recognition in the singles and doubles rankings.

Although the Pepperdine men’s tennis team, NCAA quarterfinalists in 2013, lost several key members to graduation, the Waves are still expected to do great things in 2014. Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) is the Waves’ most accomplished returner after earning ITA All-American status in 2013, and has earned a preseason ranking of #33. He concluded the fall with a tied for team-best eight singles victories, including four versus ranked opponents.

David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) was rewarded for his phenomenal fall season with his first-ever appearance in the singles rankings, coming in at #58. The senior went 8-3 in the fall, highlighted by a round of 16 appearance at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. In his two other fall tournaments, the Battle of the Bay Classic and the USTA Clay Court Collegiate Challenge, Sofaer advanced to the quarterfinals.

Overall, Pepperdine returns five letterwinners from last season while adding seven newcomers.

Although the Pepperdine women’s tennis team opens the season listed at #48, second amongst West Coast Conference teams, the Waves are highly touted in the individual singles and doubles rankings. Five different student-athletes garnered a singles ranking, while four of those five appeared in the doubles poll as well.

Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), a 2012 All-American and 2013 ITA Southwest Regional Player to Watch, is likely to resume her role as the Waves’ No. 1 singles player and opens the season ranked #19.

The junior went 13-5 in the fall, which included a tournament championship at the season-opening Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and a semifinal appearance at the USTA/ITA Southwest Region Championship.

Sophomore transfer Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/DePaul) begins her first dual season with the Waves ranked #79, while senior Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) follows at #93.

Underclassmen round out the list of Pepperdine’s ranked singles players as sophomore Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and freshman Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) rank in at #112 and #117, respectively.

In doubles, Guillermo and Granillo are ranked #39 followed by Capannolo and Chiang at #40.

The Pepperdine women’s team, hindered by inexperience in 2013, opened the year 0-9 before turning the corner, winning the WCC Tournament and making their 27th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Waves’ women’s team consists of four returning student-athletes and five newcomers.

The men’s team opens the 2014 dual campaign at Washington on Jan. 21 before hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24-25 (bringing in Cal, Alabama and San Diego)

The women’s team begins the dual season on Jan. 31 at USC. The Waves first home match is scheduled for Feb. 8 against San Diego State.
