Women's Tennis Opens 2013 Dual Season At Home vs. USC, Fresno State

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women’s tennis team, ranked #33 in the ITA poll, opens the 2013 spring season at home this Thursday, Jan. 31 against #4 USC. The Waves continue the opening week on Friday, Feb. 1 versus #59 Fresno State.

Pepperdine and the Trojans (3-0) square off at 1:30 p.m., while the dual with the Bulldogs is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

LOOKING AHEAD - Pepperdine remains at home next week, hosting UC Irvine and Stanford. The Waves face the Anteaters on Friday, Feb. 8, followed by a contest vs. the Cardinal on Saturday, Feb. 9. Both matches are slated for a 1 p.m. start.

USC - The Trojans are 3-0 in 2013 after beating Akron and UC Irvine in ITA Kick-Off Weekend action. Several players are individually ranked in singles including Danielle Lao (#14), Sabrina Santamaria (#17), Zoe Scandalis (#19) and Gabriella DeSimone (#56). In doubles, Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian are the top-ranked doubles pair in the NCAA. Scandalis and DeSimone sit at#13, while Lao and Valeria Pulido are ranked #40 in doubles.

FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs are 1-1 after competing at Cal for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Fresno State lost to the Golden Bears, 7-0, before rebounding with a 5-2 triumph against UNLV. The Waves are 13-7 all-time against the Bulldogs and have won the last three straight.

WCC DOUBLES TEAM OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara have swept the conference award in doubles every month it has been awarded in 2012-13. The duo won WCC Doubles Team of the Month in both October and November to bring their total award count to five.

USTA/ITA SOUTHWEST REGIONAL RECAP - The Waves had a successful run at regionals highlighted by Lorraine Guillermo’s appearance in the singles semifinals. In addition to Guillermo, Ale Granillo and Khunpak Issara represented Pepperdine in the round of 16.

WCC SINGLES PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo went a perfect 3-0 in singles in September at the SDSU Fall Classic to open the 2012 fall season. Guillermo defeated opponents from San Diego and North Texas to win the top-tier red bracket.

ITA ALL-AMERICAN SUCCESS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara won the consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to earn the bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship. The duo suffered an early loss in the main draw but fired back with four-straight wins - all against ranked teams - to win the consolation bracket. They first rallied to defeat Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd 8-6 before knocking out two top-10 ranked teams in the quarter and semifinals. The Waves made short work of #9-ranked Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay of Stanford, topping the Cardinal 8-2. Guillermo and Issara then eliminated Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting, ranked third, of California by the same score. In the finals, Guillermo and Issara controlled the match from start to finish and defeated #14 Danielle Collins and Lauren Embree of Florida – the defending NCAA team champions – by a score of 8-3.

NATIONAL INDOORS - Following the impressive run at the All-American, Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara reached the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. With a 3-1 record at the tournament, the Waves’ top doubles pair concluded the fall season with a 7-2 record.

2012 ALL-WCC TEAM - The Waves earned high acclaim in the 2012 all-conference awards. Lorraine Guillermo was dubbed West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, becoming the seventh player in Pepperdine history to do so. Guillermo also picked up second-team honors in singles and first-team accolades in doubles. Khunpak Issara made the first team roster in both singles and doubles, while Ale Granillo made All-WCC singles second team. Ali Walters and Arianna Colffer both earned honorable mention status in both singles and doubles.

WRITING RECORDS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara’s 2012 doubles win tally of 20 ranks fifth in Pepperdine’s single season record book. The duo is just four wins short of writing their names in the career records category.

RANKINGS - Khunpak Issara earned a preseason singles rank #39 and is currently T-#92 in the first rankings release of 2013. Lorraine Guillermo is ranked #104 in singles. Together, Issara and Guillermo improved upon their preseason doubles ranking of #7 and are currently listed at #4. As a team, the Waves open the season at #33.

Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 36th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2012-13 season with a career record of 620-317 (.662). He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine. On the court, he was a finalist at the 1969 WCAC singles tournament and won the doubles title with John Lovelace. Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on three occasions.
