WCC Player of the Week Awards Go To Capannolo, Chiang

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women’s tennis standouts Michaela Capannolo and Yuki Chiang took home West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards for their achievements on the court last week. Capannolo was named the Singles Player of the Week, while taking Doubles Team of the Week honors alongside Chiang.
Sophomore Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) helped the #44-ranked Pepperdine women’s tennis team to a decisive 6-1 win over #48 San Diego State last Saturday in the Waves’ home opener.
She first teamed up with freshman Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) in doubles to top Hailey Johnson and Dora Somoracz 6-2.
In singles, Capannolo nearly shut out Kennedy Davis 6-0, 6-1 from the No. 4 spot in the lineup.
Capannolo and Chiang are listed at #40 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. Both are also ranked in singles at #112 and #117, respectively.
The Australian native has helped Pepperdine a 2-1 record, with a win over #38 UC Irvine in addition to the Aztecs. The Waves’ only loss was a 5-2 setback against #6 USC.
Capannolo is 2-1 on the young season with her only loss coming against the Trojan’s #80-ranked Gabriella DeSimone in there sets.
Pepperdine hosts a pair of duals this week, beginning with a Valentine’s Day match up vs. UNLV at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The week continues with a 12 p.m. contest vs. Arizona State on Saturday.
