March 4, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – For the third time in four weeks, the Pepperdine women’s tennis team has swept the West Coast Conference Player of the Week Awards. Junior Lorraine Guillermo picked up Singles Player of the Week honors, while Ale Granillo and Matea Cutura were voted Doubles Team of the Week for a record third-consecutive time.
The Waves have utterly dominated the WCC awards. In the first four weeks, a Pepperdine player has been named Singles Player of the Week three times. The Waves have yet to not win the Doubles Team of the Week honor.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) wins her second weekly honor after earning a victory in her only match last week. The junior posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory vs. #99-ranked Stefanie Mikesz of Memphis on Tuesday. Although the Tigers won the dual – their 36th consecutive win at home – Guillermo posted her team-best eighth win of the season over a ranked opponent. Guillermo was up 3-0 in the first set on Hawaii’s Cindy Nguyen on Saturday when rain forced the dual to be called.
Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) are now the three-time defending WCC Doubles Team of the Week winners. The duo extended their streak to six wins in a row after defeating Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko of Memphis by an 8-5 tally. It was the Tiger pairs’ first loss in dual play in 2014. Granillo and Cutura are a team-best 6-1 in dual action this season, and 8-2 overall.
Pepperdine hosts Fresno State at 11 a.m. this Saturday on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
