Lorraine Guillermo, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and Alex Sarkissian awarded by conference office.
March 13, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – For the fifth week in a row, at least one Pepperdine tennis student-athlete has taken home West Coast Conference Player of the Week acclaim. Lorraine Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of the Waves’ women’s tennis team were named Doubles Team of the Week, while Alex Sarkissian of the men’s squad earned his second Singles Player of the Week award of 2014.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) kept the Waves’ streak going, as the Pepperdine women have completely swept the WCC Doubles Team of the Week awards through the first five weeks of the season.
Junior Guillermo teamed up with freshman Runglerdkriangkrai for the first time this dual season versus Fresno State last Saturday. After the Bulldogs and Waves split the matches at No. 2 and No. 3, the doubles point rested on the outcome of Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai’s match at No. 1.
Despite little experience playing with one another, Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai came through in the clutch and rallied for an 8-6 win over Fresno State’s top pair of Aishwarya Agrawal and Sofya Malysheva. It was Pepperdine’s first win at the No. 1 position this dual season. Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai are 3-1 overall in 2013-14.
Senior Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) continued his winning ways last week in duals vs. #5 USC and #51 TCU. Although the Waves fell in both contests, Sarkissian did his part and earned singles victories in both duals.
He opened the week with his second win over a top-10 ranked opponent of the 2014 dual season. After narrowly dropping the first set to #10 Yannick Hanfmann of USC, 4-6, Sarkissian rallied to win the second frame 6-3 to send the match to a third set tiebreaker. The senior Wave owned the 10-point tiebreaker, jumping out to a 6-2 lead and closing out the match with four unanswered points to win 10-2.
The next day versus the Horned Frogs, Sarkissian earned his team-best ninth win of the dual season. Sarkissian is 9-3 in duals, all while playing No. 1, and a team-best 17-8 overall in 2013-14.
