Waves Set for Road Dual at San Diego State
Women's tennis team looks to defend two-match win streak on Wednesday vs. the Aztecs.

MALIBU, Calif. - After wrapping the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with back-to-back victories, the Pepperdine women’s tennis team looks to extend its streak with a road match this Wednesday, March 20 at #52 San Diego State.

LOOKING BACK - The Waves suffered another close loss to open action at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic before rebounding with two-straight victories to win the back draw ... Pepperdine dropped a 4-3 decision to #34 Yale, before topping Michigan State (4-0) and Marshall (4-1) ... The outing prior, the Waves lost an incredibly close match to #3 UCLA ... The doubles point came down to a 9-7 decision in favor of the Bruins on court two, and the visitors managed the singles split to win 4-3 ... Lorraine Guillermo defeated #2-ranked Robin Anderson 6-4, 6-2, while Khunpak Issara and Ale Granillo won in convincing fashion over ranked opponents ... Issara, then-ranked #57, downed #68 Pamela Montez 6-2, 6-1, while Granillo beat #45 Kyle McPhillips, 6-2, 6-2.
STREAKING - With three singles wins this weekend, Khunpak Issara improved her streak to six matches ... The senior is a team-best 9-2 in duals this season ... Lorraine Guillermo enters this week on a three-match win streak ... Together, Issara and Guillermo have won the last five-straight doubles matches ... Ale Granillo and Michaela Capannolo boast a three-match win streak in doubles.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS - Khunpak Issara, who earned a fall preseason singles rank #39, began the 2013 dual season tied at #92, reached as high as #43 and is currently at #56... Ale Granillo entered the rankings on Feb. 12 at #124 and is currently a season-best #110 ... Lorraine Guillermo was ranked #104 in singles to begin the season, dropped out for a time and re-entered on March 12 at #54 ... In doubles, Issara and Guillermo boasted a preseason doubles ranking of #7 and are currently #13 after being ranked as high as #4.
SAN DIEGO STATE - The Aztecs are 7-4 in 2013 ... Last week, SDSU defeated Marquette 5-2 before falling to #15 Cal 6-1 ... SDSU is 1-5 vs. ranked opponents, with its lone win coming against #40 Saint Mary’s, 4-3 ... Pepperdine is 28-21 all-time vs. the Aztecs ... SDSU is currently ranked #52 as a team, and new ITA rankings will be released on March 19.
LOOKING AHEAD - Pepperdine hosts the next five-straight matches at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center beginning with Sacramento State (March 26) followed by San Francisco (March 29), Santa Clara (March 30), Gonzaga (April 5) and Portland (April 6).
WRITING RECORDS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara’s 2012 doubles win tally of 20 ranks fifth in Pepperdine’s single season record book. The duo’s career dual win tally of 26 ranks tied for fourth. Two more wins will give the duo ownership of third place all-time.
BANNER WINS - Khunpak Issara def. #2-ranked Krista Hardebeck of Stanford in three sets, while Lorraine Guillermo registered a straight-set win over Nicole Gibbs -- the 2012 NCAA Singles Champion.

WCC DOUBLES TEAM OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara have won the conference award in doubles three of the four months it has been awarded in 2012-13. The duo won WCC Doubles Team of the Month in both October, November and February to bring their total award count to six.
WCC SINGLES PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo went a perfect 3-0 in singles in September at the SDSU Fall Classic to open the 2012 fall season. Guillermo defeated opponents from San Diego and North Texas to win the top-tier red bracket.
2013 WCC PRESEASON POLL - The Waves were picked to finish first in the conference standings in 2013, followed by Saint Mary’s, San Diego, Santa Clara, BYU, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, Gonzaga and Portland. The top of Pepperdine’s lineup, Lorraine Guillermo, Khunpak Issara and Ale Granillo, claimed three of the six spots on the preseason all-conference team.
ITA ALL-AMERICAN SUCCESS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara won the consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to earn the bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship. The duo suffered an early loss in the main draw but fired back with four-straight wins - all against ranked teams - to win the consolation bracket. They first rallied to defeat Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd 8-6 before knocking out two top-10 ranked teams in the quarter and semifinals. The Waves made short work of #9-ranked Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay of Stanford, topping the Cardinal 8-2. Guillermo and Issara then eliminated Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting, ranked third, of California by the same score. In the finals, Guillermo and Issara controlled the match from start to finish and defeated #14 Danielle Collins and Lauren Embree of Florida – the defending NCAA team champions – by a score of 8-3.
NATIONAL INDOORS - Following the impressive run at the All-American Championship, Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara reached the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. With a 3-1 record at the tournament, the Waves’ top doubles pair concluded the fall season with a 7-2 record.
2012 ALL-WCC TEAM - The Waves earned high acclaim in the 2012 all-conference awards. Lorraine Guillermo was dubbed West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, becoming the seventh player in Pepperdine history to do so. Guillermo also picked up second-team honors in singles and first-team accolades in doubles. Khunpak Issara made the first team roster in both singles and doubles, while Ale Granillo made All-WCC singles second team. Ali Walters and Arianna Colffer both earned honorable mention status in both singles and doubles.
Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 36th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2012-13 season with a career record of 620-317 (.662). He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine. On the court, he was a finalist at the 1969 WCAC singles tournament and won the doubles title with John Lovelace. Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on three occasions.
