Women's Tennis Hosts Gonzaga and Portland This Weekend
Waves on a three-match win streak heading into Friday and Saturday's action.

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women’s tennis team, riding a three-match win streak, looks to continue the recent bout of success this weekend with matches vs. Gonzaga and Portland at home. The Waves square off with the Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 5 followed by an 11 a.m. match on Saturday against the Pilots.
MATCH 16 - Friday (April 5) at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center: Pepperdine (5-10, 2-0 WCC) vs. Gonzaga (9-6, 0-3 WCC at 1:30 p.m.
MATCH 17 - Saturday (April 6) at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center: Pepperdine vs. Portland (8-9, 1-3 WCC) at 11 a.m.
COVERAGE - Full results and recaps will be posted on PepperdineSports.com at the conclusion of the match ... Additionally, live scoring will be up and running on Friday vs. the Bulldogs.
LOOKING BACK - The Waves won three in a row last week, all at home ... Pepperdine opened the week with a 6-1 triumph over Sacramento State ... West Coast Conference action opened later in the week and the Waves defeated San Francisco (7-0) and Santa Clara (6-1).
STREAKING - Khunpak Issara improved her win streak in singles to 10 matches last week with three wins in Malibu ... The senior is a team-best 13-2 in duals this season ... Issara and Lorraine Guillermo have won the last nine-straight doubles matches ... Ale Granillo, Michaela Capannolo, Guillermo and Megan Moore all boast a three-match win streak in singles.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS - Khunpak Issara, who earned a fall preseason singles rank #39, began the 2013 dual season tied at #92, reached as high as #43 and is currently at #58. .. Lorraine Guillermo was ranked #104 in singles to begin the season and moved up so a season-best ranking of #40 on March 26 ... Ale Granillo entered the rankings on Feb. 12, reach as high as #110, but is currently not ranked ... In doubles, Issara and Guillermo boasted a preseason doubles ranking of #7 and are currently #10 after being ranked as high as #4.
GONZAGA - The Bulldogs are 9-6 overall but only 0-3 in WCC play ... Four of Gonzaga’s five losses have come to ranked opponents ... The team’s doubles lineup is ever evolving as 14 unique pairings have seen action in the three doubles spots ... Katie Edwards sees the most time at No. 1 singles and is 6-7 ... Samantha Polayes has the best dual season singles record at 12-2 and mostly plays at No. 4.
PORTLAND- Portland is 8-9 overall after defeating Cal Poly but losing to UC Santa Barbara last week ... In WCC play, the Pilots are 1-3 .... Maja Mladenovic holds down the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup with a team-best 12-5 record and is on a seven-match win streak.

WCC DOUBLES TEAM OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara have won the conference award in doubles three of the four months it has been awarded in 2012-13. The duo won WCC Doubles Team of the Month in both October, November and February to bring their total award count to six.
WCC SINGLES PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo went a perfect 3-0 in singles in September at the SDSU Fall Classic to open the 2012 fall season. Guillermo defeated opponents from San Diego and North Texas to win the top-tier red bracket.
WRITING RECORDS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara’s 2012 doubles win tally of 20 ranks fifth in Pepperdine’s single season record book. The duo’s career dual win tally of 29 ranks third. Nine more wins will give the duo ownership of second place all-time.
2013 WCC PRESEASON POLL - The Waves were picked to finish first in the conference standings in 2013, followed by Saint Mary’s, San Diego, Santa Clara, BYU, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, Gonzaga and Portland. The top of Pepperdine’s lineup, Lorraine Guillermo, Khunpak Issara and Ale Granillo, claimed three of the six spots on the preseason all-conference team.
THE LINEUP - Lorraine Guillermo, Khunpak Issara and Ale Guillermo hold down the top three spots in the singles lineup ... Michaela Capannolo and Megan Moore share time between the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, while Danielle Feneridis and Abigail Phillips have both seen action at No. 6 ... In doubles, Issara and Guillermo own the top spot, and have since the 2012 dual season ... Capannolo and Granillo see the most time at no. 2 doubles, while Moore and Tara Panu are the most likely pair to see in the No. 3 spot.
Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 36th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2012-13 season with a career record of 620-317 (.662). He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine. On the court, he was a finalist at the 1969 WCAC singles tournament and won the doubles title with John Lovelace. Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on three occasions.
