MALIBU, Calif. – For a conference-best fourth time this season, Matea Cutura and Ale Granillo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team were dubbed the West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week. The award comes just one day after the pair picked up All-WCC second team honors in both singles and doubles.
Pepperdine’s lone senior, Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), went out on top in her final regular-season dual at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center last week. Granillo, who has helped the Waves to two WCC Tournament championships, three consecutive conference regular season titles and three-straight appearances at the NCAA Tournament, won in both singles and doubles to defeat Loyola Marymount, 4-0 on Senior Day.
After a brief ceremony honoring the senior, Granillo took to the court and was all business. She and partner Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) made short work of Kristine Kouyoumijia and Reka Rohonyi, posting their second complete 8-0 shutout of the season. The duo owns the best record on the team at 14-3 overall and 12-2 in dual play. Granillo and Cutura tore through the league competition, going 4-1.
The pair enters WCC Tournament semifinals in Friday on a four match win streak.
With the help of Cutura and Granillo, the Waves have concluded the regular season on a 12 match win streak – the longest since Pepperdine won 14 in a row in 1999.
