Waves Well-Represented in Oracle/ITA Preseason Rankings

ITA Rankings | Riviera/ITA All-American

MALIBU, Calif.: The 8th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team earned multiple recognitions in the Oracle/ITA preseason singles and doubles rankings, as released by the International Tennis Association on Tuesday afternoon. Four singles and two doubles partnerships were in the rankings, highlighted by career-high singles rankings from Ashley Lahey (#3), Mayar Sherif (#13) and Jessica Failla (#16).

The Waves also received quite a showing in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship field as three singles and one doubles pairing advanced straight through to the main draw.

    No. 3 Ashley Lahey was named ITA All-American ITA Southwest Region Player to Watch and WCC Freshman of the Year in 2017, as well as earning All-WCC fist team singles and doubles honors. She reached the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals and posted an impressive 32-7 overall singles record in her freshman campaign, including a 12-5 record against ranked opponents and a 19-4 dual record.

    No. 13 Mayar Sherif garnered an ITA All-American nod and All-WCC first team honors in singles and doubles. She finished the season ranked No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings and ranked as high as No. 14 last season. She was the only Wave to earn a spot in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in her 2017 campaign and reached the round of 16 for singles action. She tabbed a 27-14 singles record including a 16-9 dual output and had a 16-match winning streak during the season.

    No. 16 Jessica Failla joins the Waves' ranks after transferring from USC. While playing for the Women of Troy, she earned All-Pac 12 second team honors and amassed a 44-20 overall singles record with a 24-10 dual record. In 2017, she ranked as high as No. 33 in the ITA national rankings and reached the second round of the NCAA Championships.

    No. 66 Laura Gulbe earned All-WCC second team singles honors last season and ranked as high as No. 51 throughout the season. She garnered WCC All-Tournament singles honors and compiled a 17-10 overall singles record and a 12-6 dual record for the Waves. She posted a 5-4 record against nationally ranked opposition.

    No. 10 Mayar Sherif and Ashley Lahey will start their first season as a doubles partnership in 2017-18. Sherif and graduated partner Christine Maddox finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings after defeating the top competition throughout the year. She was an ITA All-American in doubles as well as singles, and posted a 30-6 overall record in doubles and a 26-7 record with Maddox. She went on a 19-match winning streak and went 10-5 against nationally ranked opponents and defeated two separate top-ranked pairings. Lahey also earned All-WCC first team honors alongside partner Luisa Stefani. The pair posted a 19-12 doubles record on the season.

    No. 39 Jessica Failla and Dzina Milovanovic will also play together for the first time this season as Failla starts her junior transfer season and Milovanovic begins her junior campaign. At USC, Failla tabbed a 34-15 overall doubles mark with a 20-11 doubles dual record. She and her partner Rianna Valdes ranked as high as No. 41 in the ITA doubles national rankings. Milovanovic garnered All-WCC second team honors with graduated Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai after amassing a 19-10 overall doubles output, including a 14-8 dual record.

    The Waves will once again be competing in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Pepperdine will host the prequalifying singles and doubles draw, which has 64 singles and 32 doubles partnerships in the field. The qualifying draw and main draw will be played at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Once through the first three rounds of competition, eight singles and four doubles pairs will move through to the qualifying rounds, making the draw for singles 64 and doubles 32.

    After three more rounds of play, the singles competitors will have eight more advance through to the main draw where the final draw of 32 players will commence. The final doubles main draw will have 32 duos as well.

    The Waves had three singles and one doubles partnership advance straight through to the main draw. Jessica Failla, Ashley Lahey and Mayar Sherif will start competition on October 5 for singles and Sherif and Lahey will partner for doubles. Laura Gulbe earned a straight bid for the qualifying singles round and Failla and Dzina Milovanovic have earned a spot in the prequalifying doubles draw. Milovanovic and Failla also have spots on the doubles or singles alternative list, respectively.
