Na, Guillermo Named September's WCC Players of the Month
Waves earn two conference player of the month nods.
Oct. 4, 2012
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) had a brilliant start to the season, becoming the first Pepperdine player in nearly a decade to shoot back-to-back below-par scores at the season’s first two tournaments.
The junior also led the Waves to the team title at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Na tied for fourth place at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational with a 1-under 218 and then tied for second place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 4-under 212. Four of her six rounds were below par. Her stroke average for the six rounds was 71.67.
Na, a preseason All-American, is currently ranked 21st nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, best in the WCC. The last time a Pepperdine player started a season with back-to-back below-par tournaments was Carolina Llano in fall 2003.
This is the third time Na has collected WCC Player of the Month recognition.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) went a perfect 3-0 in singles at the SDSU Fall Classic to open the 2012 fall season. Guillermo defeated opponents from San Diego and North Texas to win the top-tier red bracket.
The sophomore and 2012 WCC Freshman of the Year was dominant in her first match, defeating the Toreros’ Laura Claus, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, she downed Kseniya Barbabush of North Texas in straight sets.
The championship match pitted Guillermo against Stephanie Hoffpauir. Although San Diego’s No. 2 singles player in 2012 took the first frame 6-3, Guillermo rebounded with wins in the final two sets to claim the tournament title.
Guillermo now heads to the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, where she’ll compete alongside Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) in the doubles main draw of the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Na is back in action on Oct. 19-21 for the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
