MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team will add one more to its ranks in 2013-14, as head coach Gualberto Escudero announced the signing of Yuki Chiang to a national letter-of-intent.
“We are very excited to have Yuki as a Pepperdine Wave. She brings a terrific junior record to the program,” said Escudero, who is once again assisted by Scott Doerner. “We look forward to seeing her progress at Pepperdine and being a significant contributor over the next four years.”
Chiang, a native of Ojai, Calif., led Campbell Hall High School to a CIF Division I Championship in 2012 after defeating University High School 10-8 in the title match.
“I cannot wait to attend Pepperdine University,” said Chiang. “Simply put it is the best university with the best tennis program in the best location.”
An accomplished player in the junior circuit, Chiang is a five-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.com. She currently is ranked #91 nationally and #26 in California.
In 2009, at the age of 14, Chiang won the Junior Orange Bowl, which features international talent. She continued to experience success throughout the years, and won the Spring Championships in both singles and doubles in the 16-and-under division. In the 18s age bracket, Chiang won a singles and doubles crown at the Long Beach National Championship.
Most recently, she reached the semifinals of the Orange County/J.P. Yamasaki Open in October.
Chiang will join a tradition-rich program at Pepperdine. The Waves have captured 22 West Coast Conference Tournament Championships since 1985 and have reached the NCAA Tournament the last 25 years in a row.
Pepperdine opens the 2013 dual season on Jan. 31 versus USC.
