MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team fought diligently, but settled for second place at the Asics Classic after suffering a 3-1 setback to Wisconsin to conclude the tournament. Despite the loss, Kellie Woolever, Ryann Chandler and Katie Messing all had solid weekends and represented the Waves on the all-tournament team.
Ellen Chapman, who had 22 kills in the Badgers’ 25-22, 31-29, 22-25, 25-10 victory, was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Chandler (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) averaged 4.00 digs/set this weekend, including 14 in the loss to Wisconsin. The freshman, who came to Pepperdine as a setter, displayed her versatility all weekend and proved she’s got the defensive chops to be the Waves’ starting libero.
Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished 11.70 assists/set in three matches, resulting in the Waves’ impressive weekend hitting percentage of .316.
Rounding out the all-tournament team for Pepperdine was Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), who averaged 3.29 kills/set and ranked third on the team with 23 total kills despite sitting out the match vs. Iona.
In tonight’s tournament finale, Wisconsin (3-0) edged Pepperdine (2-1) in blocks 11.5-4.0. On offense, the Badgers hit at a sound .341 (58 kills-13 errors-132 attempts) attack percentage.
Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) had her second double-double of the weekend, with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Despite hitting at a .391 clip in the opening frame, the Badgers trumped that with a sizzling .577 hitting percentage. Wisconsin held a small lead the majority of the set, but extended it to four points at 17-21 prompting head coach Nina Matthies to call for a timeout. Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) put down a kill from a difficult angle on the outside to swing the momentum back in Pepperdine’s favor. The Waves managed to tie the score back up at 22, but Wisconsin continued to fire strong and true and secured the set 25-22.
Set two was a close battle from start to finish, featuring 22 ties and eight lead changes. Down 22-23, Wisconsin committed a service error out of the timeout and Larsen capitalized with an ace during her turn at the line to give Pepperdine set point. Wisconsin came up with the sideout to send the frame to extra points, and Chapman laced a kill on the backline to give her team set point.
Racich put the ball back on Pepperdine’s side with a kill. Chandler then stepped up to the line and forced an overpass with her strong serve that translated into a Messing kill, but Wisconsin once again sided out to even things at 26-all.
The Waves earned one more set point before Wisconsin scored twice in a row to take a 29-28 lead. Although Larsen tied the score at 28 with a kill, a pair of untimely errors gave the Badgers the 31-29 win and a 2-0 overall lead.
Pepperdine sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in set three, but Wisconsin answered right back with five-straight points. Although the Badgers maintain a small advantage throughout the set, the Waves went on a 4-2 run late to take a 20-19 lead. UW once again tipped the scales back in its favor, but Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) and Racich kills in succession put Pepperdine back on top 22-21. Chandler laid down an ace out of the timeout and Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) terminated a ball to extend the lead 24-22. Cash came up big once again to put the set away 25-22.
Wisconsin took an 8-2 lead to open the fourth, and the Waves were never able to recover. Hitting at just .080 (5-3-25) , Pepperdine bowed out 25-10 and settled for a second-place finish at the tournament.
The Waves remain home to host the Pepperdine Invitational next week, Sept. 6-7. Teams heading to Malibu include UC Santa Barbara, Virginia and Colorado State.
