MALIBU, Calif. – Led by double-double performances from both Katie Messing and Kelley Larsen, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team topped Virginia 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Waves (4-1) face Colorado State (5-0) tonight at 7:30 p.m. to determine the winner of the Pepperdine Invitational.
Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) followed up her career-best 18 kill performance against UC Santa Barbara Friday evening with 17 kills today versus the Cavaliers. The junior outside hitter also collected 12 digs for her second-ever kills-digs double double. Messing added four blocks and an ace for a match-high 21 points.
Larsen followed closely behind with a career-high 16 kills earned at a personal-best .382 (16 kills-3 errors-34 attempts) hitting percentage. With 11 digs, she achieved her second double double of the season and fourth of her career.
Also reaching double figures in digs was Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) with 10 and Ryann Chandler (Del Mar, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) with 14. Overall, the Waves out-dug the Cavaliers 60-47.
Defense at the net was led by Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy), who tied a career-high with eight blocks (six block assists/two block solos).
Although Virginia edged Pepperdine in kills, 60-56, the Waves were more efficient on offense, hitting at a .320 (56-15-128) clip. The Cavaliers were limited to a .247 (60-22-154) attack percentage, thanks in part Pepperdine’s impenetrable block defense.
Strehlow dished 45 assists in the winning effort.
In the follow-up contest, Colorado State kept its perfect record intact with a 3-1 win over UC Santa Barbara.
The Gauchos (2-3 overall, 0-2 tournament) take on the Cavaliers (3-2 overall, 0-2 tournament) at 5 p.m., prior to the Pepperdine-Colorado State contest. For live coverage, visit the Tournament Central.
