Pepperdine Dispatches Florida International in Three Sets
Jazmine Orozco leads the women's volleyball team with 13 kills in the final match of the Rams Volleyball Classic.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The #12 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team concluded the Rams Volleyball Classic on a high note, posting a dominant 3-0 victory against Florida International. Jazmine Orozco was a force for the Waves with 13 kills.
Pepperdine, now 6-2 overall, won by set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-15.
Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) registered 13 kills earned on a blazing .526 (13 kills-3 errors-19 attempts) hitting percentage. The junior also added two aces to finish the afternoon with a match-high 15 points.
The Waves’ offense also got a boost from Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS), who was fresh off a career-high performance against New Mexico State earlier today. Larsen, who nailed down 12 kills against the Aggies, recorded nine in the follow-up match versus the Golden Panthers. Larsen also picked up eight digs on the defensive end.
Pepperdine was relentless on offense, out-killing FIU 43-29. The Golden Panthers (2-7) were led by Marija Prsa, who managed eight kills.
Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dictated the offense with 32 assists. The junior, who was an AVCA All-American honorable mention in 2011, was also credited with six kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
FIU fought Pepperdine point-for-point in set one, and took an 11-12 lead that prompted a timeout. The Waves took over the momentum from there with a 7-3 run that put the score at 18-15. Although the Golden Panthers never lingered very far behind, Pepperdine was able to side out its way to a 25-22 win.
The Waves held FIU to just a .091 (8-5-33) clip in the second frame, while hitting .270 (16-6-37) themselves. Larsen and Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley) paced Pepperdine with four kills apiece and the team went on to win 25-17.
It was all Pepperdine and then some as the Waves opened the third set on a 9-0 run – eight of which points were scored with Orozco at the service line. The deficit was too much for the Golden Panthers to overcome, and the Waves won 25-15. Orozco delivered both of her aces in the final set and also posted a team-leading three kills.
Mason finished the match with five kills and four blocks.
The Waves are faced with a challenging final week of the preconference season, starting on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at #3 UCLA – which will be aired on the newly formed Pac-12 Network. Pepperdine then competes at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cub to play against #6 Florida State, Ohio State (receiving votes) and the tournament host, Houston on Sept. 14-15.
