LOS ANGELES – The #2-ranked team in the country proved to be too much for the #18 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team, as the Bruins swept the Waves 3-0 inside the John Wooden Center on Wednesday evening.

UCLA hit a sizzling .420 (51 kills-9 errors-100 attempts) to win by set scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-22.

Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) was solid for the Waves (6-3), pacing the team with 12 kills earned on a .417 (12-2-24) hitting percentage.

Eight players in addition to Orozco posted kills in the match including Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) with five and Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) with four.

The defense was led by Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS), who reached the double digit plateau with 10 digs. Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) added eight in addition to 30 assists.

Tabi Love could not be touched, and put away 16 kills earned on a .538 (16-2-26) hitting percentage for the Bruins. Rachael Kidder followed by 14 put aways.

The Bruins came out hot and sprinted to a 4-1 lead before the Waves saw kills on consecutive points from Adelhelm and Cash to come back within one. Pepperdine knotted the score at seven, but were never able to take the lead. Woolever nearly came up with a spectacular pancake dig, but it was ruled a UCLA kill to give the home team a five point lead, 15-10. The momentum fell in the Bruins’ direction the remainder of the set as they went on to win 25-14.

Pepperdine took a 5-2 lead in set two, thanks in part to relentless defense, but the Bruins responded with a 7-1 run to regain the advantage. The Waves hung tight, however, and tied the score back up at 14 after Adelhelm registered her second kill of the frame. Unfortunately for Pepperdine, UCLA went on another hot streak and closed the set out 25-15.

Although the Waves fell behind 8-2 in the third stanza, they chipped away at the lead after Cash blocked a setter dump and Lexi Weldon (Tallahassee, Fla./Chiles HS) put the punctuation mark on the end of a long rally with a kill. Pepperdine’s offense was fueled by Orozco, who continued to send home kills, but in the end it was not enough to get past a veteran Bruin squad. UCLA took the final set 25-22.

The Waves’ tough week continues at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Sept. 14-15. Pepperdine opens the tournament against #11 Florida State and #21 Ohio State on Friday before closing action on Saturday versus Houston.
