The Waves had control from the beginning of the first set, going on a 9-3 run to open the match fueled by blocks from Dyer and Gross and kills from Frohling and Lyons. Pepperdine maintained a sizeable lead throughout the set, including by five service apiece from Lishman and Lyons. A pair of kills from Gross and two more from Frohling closed the set with a 25-14 Waves’ win for the early advantage.

The 49ers made the adjustments in the second set and despite an early 11-7 lead from the Waves, came back to tie things up 11-11. Each side went point-for-point en route to a 17-17 tie before the opposition grabbed another lead and took it to a 25-21 set win to tie the match heading into intermission.

Pepperdine once again broke out of the starting gate in the third set, amassing a 7-2 advantage early on with strong services from Farr and kills from O’Harra. The Waves went on another run with seven-straight services from Dyer, including back-to-back blocks from Gross and Harris. Another rejection from Dyer and O’Harra late in the set, followed by a Lishman ace, put the Waves up 2-1 with a 25-18 third set victory.

The fourth set went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging nine tied scores and three lead changes. The Waves pulled ahead first with a 12-10 lead, but the opposition took over at the 18-16 mark. Pepperdine tied things up 20-20 and an ace from Lyons and kills from Harris and Frohling finalized the Waves’ 3-1 victory over Long Beach State on top of a 25-21 fourth set win.
