HOUSTON – The #18 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team concluded its dominant run through the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup with a 3-0 sweep against tournament host Houston. Jazmine Orozco registered her third double-double in as many matches to lead the Waves to their third sweep of the weekend.
Pepperdine (9-3) downed #11 Florida State and #21 Ohio State in three sets on Friday before blanking Houston (1-8), 25-18, 25-15, 25-15, this afternoon to win the tournament. It was the Waves’ second tournament win of the season, having previously won the Asics Classic two weeks ago.
Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois), who has led Pepperdine all weekend long with 4.33 kills/set, once again paced the Waves today with a match-best 14 kills while hitting .321 (14 kills-5 errors-28 attempts) and 11 digs.
Senior middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) had a strong day with eight kills and five blocks.
As a team the Waves out-killed the Cougars 45-29. Pepperdine hit .287 (45-14-108) and held Houston to just a .073 (29-21-110) clip.
Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) quarterbacked the offense with 32 assists. The junior added seven kills off of 13 errorless attacks to boost the Waves’ offense.
The defense was paced by Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS), who picked up 13 digs.
The first set remained close until, up by just one at 10-9, the Waves broke open the frame with an 8-4 run to take a five-point lead. Pepperdine continued to outshine the Cougars, and went on to win 25-18. Orozco posted six kills in the set hitting .455, while Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) was a perfect 3-for-3 on the attack.
The Waves continued to roll in set two, and jumped to a 7-3 lead following an Adelhelm-Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) block and a Houston attack error. Pepperdine’s advantage only grew from there, and Woolever clinched the game 25-15 following her fourth kill of the set.
The momentum carried over into the third stanza, and once again the Waves claimed an early lead. Pepperdine was able to sideout a staggering 75-percent of the time, while Houston struggled and only manage to side out at a 45-percent success rate.
Lexi Weldon (Tallahassee, Fla./Chiles HS), who came off the bench in the third and lent her support with three kills and two digs, served out the match for the Waves. While up 22-15, Weldon delivered a back-row kill, followed by two Cougar attack errors to put the finishing touches on the contest.
The Waves open West Coast Conference action next week Thursday, Sept. 20 at #15 BYU before hosting Portland inside Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday, Sept. 22. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
