Women's Volleyball Falls in Four at Santa Clara

Katie Messing had a match-high 17 kills but the #18 Pepperdine women's volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision at Santa Clara on Saturday in West Coast Conference action.
The Waves dropped to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the WCC, while the Broncos improved to 12-5, 2-1, with the 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 victory.
Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) was joined in double-figure kills by junior outside hitter Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois), who had 11. Sophomore libero Michaela Christiaansen led the team with 12 digs while junior setter Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs.
The Waves hit just .137 for the match compared to the Broncos' .241. SCU also had a 13.5-8.0 edge in blocks.
After dropping the first two sets, the Waves fell behind 8-4 in the third one as well. But they battled back, led by Messing, who had eight kills in the set. Her kill put Pepperdine ahead 10-9, and then she had four in a 7-0 run that put Pepperdine in front 21-13. The Waves had a 14-10 lead in the fourth set but the Broncos then ran off nine straight points.
Pepperdine has one more road match coming up, a non-conference tilt at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday (Oct. 3), before beginning a run of five straight home matches, starting against San Diego next Saturday (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse.
