MALIBU, Calif. – A strong #13-ranked San Diego squad was too much for the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team today, as the Waves fell 3-0 inside Firestone Fieldhouse. Despite the loss, Katie Messing shot down a team-high 11 kills.
Set scores for today’s match were 26-24, 25-12, 25-23.
The Toreros (11-3, 3-2 West Coast Conference) were relentless on defense, owning a 60-40 advantage over the Waves in digs. Libero C’era Oliveira frustrated Pepperdine hitters with 22 digs in just three sets.
Those second-chance opportunities translated into points for San Diego. Although Pepperdine committed just nine hitting errors to USD’s 17, the Toreros sent home 55 kills while hitting .304 (55 kills-17 errors-125 attempts). The Waves (8-6, 2-4 WCC) countered with a respectable, but still lower .241 (36-9-112) clip.
Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) reached double digits in kills for the 12th time in 13 appearances, bringing her season kills average to 3.67.
Cash, who ranks 15th in the NCAA with 1.41 blocks per set, led the match with four rejections today.
Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) led the defensive effort in the back court with 12 digs.
Although San Diego led by as much as four, 13-9, the Waves fought back to tie things up at 14-all in the opening frame. The Toreros went ahead again and eventually took set point 24-22. Kills by Messing and Racich in succession knotted the score at 24, but Chloe Ferrari and Alaysia Brown both tallied clutch kills to put the set away 26-24.
San Diego was in firm control of set two and won 25-12 to take the 2-0 overall lead into intermission.
The Waves found a way to fight back in the third, going nearly point-for-point with USD from start to finish. Down 20-22, a solo Emma Fuzie (Carmel, Calif./Carmel HS) block preceded a San Diego attack error to tie things up yet again 22-22. Two sideouts later and still tied, the Toreros once again scored in the clutch moments to secure the set and the shutout 25-23.
Brown led the match with 17 kills followed by Taylor Hollins with 13.
Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished 31 assists for the Waves.
Pepperdine hits the road next week for matches at WCC newcomer Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 10, followed by a Saturday, Oct. 12 contest at Saint Mary’s. The Waves are a perfect 4-0 when playing away from Firestone Fieldhouse this season.
