Cash Posts Block No. 400 in Loss to USF
Samantha Cash becomes the third Wave to reach the 400 career blocks milestone.
MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Samantha Cash surpassed the 400 career blocks milestone, but the Pepperdine women's volleyball team was unable to take the win vs. San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. Cash is just the third Wave in program history to post 400 blocks during their career at Pepperdine.
The Waves (7-13, 2-6 WCC) lost in four sets to the Dons (11-9, 4-4 WCC), 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20.
Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) led Pepperdine with three blocks today, her first of which counted as No. 400. She also added 14 kills while hitting .478 (14 kills-3 errors-23 attempts) and one ace for a tied-for-match-high 16.5 points.
Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) matched Cash's 16.5 points with 16 kills and a block. Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) was the third Pepperdine player to reach doubles figures in kills, and ended the match with 13. Both Messing and Bergeson earned the kills-digs double-double with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) led the Pepperdine defense with 16 digs while handing out 42 assists on the offensive end. Allie Loitz ((Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) collected 13 digs while dishing a pair of aces.
USF was led by Katrina Pilepic with 15 kills and Kim Gutierrez with 27 digs.
The Dons hit for a .286 (58-14-154) attack percentage, while the Waves countered with a .217 (54-21-152) clip.
The Waves suffered a narrow loss in set one before rebounding with an impressive showing in the second frame to win 25-18. Pepperdine was unable to maintain the level of play, however, as San Francisco would not allow the Waves another set in the four-set affaire.
Pepperdine now prepares for a tough road swing that includes matches at San Diego (Oct. 23) and #9 BYU (Oct. 25).
