Dons Top Waves in Four Sets
Waves out-ace Dons 7-1 but are unable to walk away with the win.

SAN FRANCISCO – Victoria Adelhelm registered 12 kills earned on a .600 hitting percentage, but the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team was unable get past San Francisco and succumbed to a 3-1 loss. It was the final road match of the regular season.
The Waves (18-10, 7-7 West Coast Conference) lost by set scores of 25-23, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19.
Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) had an impressive outing, rallying for 12 kills earned on 20 errorless attacks. The senior led the defensive effort with seven digs and a team-high five blocks.
Offensive go-to Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) pounded down 12 kills, while Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) all posted nine kills apiece.
The Dons (15-11, 6-7 WCC) were led by Ester DeVries’ 20 kills followed by Valentina Zaloznik with 17.
The teams battled back and forth in the opening frame, and were tied late in the set at 20-all. A 3-0 USF run provided some timely cushion and while the Waves were able to get back within one at 23-22, kills from both Zaloznik and DeVries clinched it 25-23.
Pepperdine fired back on all cylinders in set two, and sprinted out to a 16-9 lead. The Waves held USF to just a .057 (6 kills-4 errors-35 attempts) while hitting .256 (17-6-43) themselves to handily win 25-15.
Orozco picked up seven kills in the second set along, followed by Larsen with four.
The momentum carried over into the pivotal third stanza, and Pepperdine held a 14-11 advantage midway through the set. The Dons got hot, however, and scored eight unanswered points before the Waves were able to side out. USF was able to hold on to its lead and win 25-20.
San Francisco continued to hold the lead heading into the fourth set, and won 25-19 to hand the Waves their third-straight loss.
Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished 39 assists in the effort and collected a match-high 16 digs. Larsen also reached double digits with 10 digs.
The Waves look to rebound next week when they host their final two WCC matches, beginning with BYU on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Senior Day will be celebrate on Saturday, Nov. 17 against Gonzaga. Lone senior Adelhelm will be recognized prior to the match.
