Pepperdine Caps Regular Season with 3-0 Victory Over North Dakota State

MALIBU, Calif.Jazmine Orozco delivered a match-high 14 kills and Katie Messing followed with 11, as the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team capped the regular season with a 3-0 triumph over North Dakota State. With the win, the Waves improve to 20-11 marking the 20th 20-win season in program history.

Pepperdine’s offense was relentless and out-killed the Bison 50-35.  The Waves were equally as impressive from the service line, registering seven total aces. Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) was responsible for three of those seven aces – a new career-high for the sophomore.

Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) not only led the offense, she paced the defense as well with a season-best 18 digs. She finished the regular season with a 3.84 kills/set average.

Also reaching double figures in kills was Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) with 11. The sophomore committed just a single error after 27 attempts to finish the night with a .370 hitting percentage.

Overall, the Waves hit for a .286 (50 kills-16 errors-119 attempts) clip while limiting the Bison to a .217 (35-10-115) success rate. North Dakota State finishes the 2012 season with a12-17 record.

Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) played her final match inside Firestone Fieldhouse. She scored 11.0 points off of seven kills, two aces and four block assists.

The Waves controlled the match from the very first serve, and quickly built a 19-13 lead in the first set. Although North Dakota State was able to narrow the gap to three points, Adelhelm sent home two kills and an ace in the final four plays to send Pepperdine to the 25-20 victory.

Adelhelm was a near-perfect 5-for-6 on the attack, while Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) helped the defense with nine digs.

Woolever would end the night with 15 total digs and 38 assists.

Although the Bison took the early lead in the second frame, the Waves quickly found themselves back on top following a 4-0 run. It was by and large a side out game from there, and Pepperdine won 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Cash was unstoppable in the frame and registered five kills on five attacks.

Cash continued her dominance in set three and delivered three consecutive aces to give Pepperdine a 12-5 advantage. Orozco helped on at the net with seven kills to lift the Waves to the 25-18 triumph and clinch the sweep for the home team.

The fate of Pepperdine’s 2012 season now rests in the hands of the NCAA Tournament selection committee. The 64-team tournament field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. on ESPNU. The Waves have been ranked in the top-25 nearly all season, and are currently receiving votes. In the latest RPI release, Pepperdine sat at No. 37.
