EUGENE, Ore. - Despite a two set lead and 19 kills from Jazmine Orozco, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team was unable to hold off #13-ranked Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Championship. The Waves finish the 2012 season with a 20-12 record after making their 22nd tournament appearance.

Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) led Pepperdine with 19 kills and 17 digs for her 18th double-double of the season. She matched a career high with four aces from the service line.

Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) was resilient for the Waves, pounding home 13 kills while hitting .462 (13 kills-1 error-26 attempts).

Pepperdine was stellar from the service line, registering a season-best nine aces while only committing five miscues. The Flyers (27-4) tallied just four aces and made six errors.

Although the Waves maintained a higher hitting percentage through the first two sets, the Flyers ended the contest with a .239 (68-25-180) clip. Pepperdine hit .214 (61-22-182) on the night.

Playing in her final indoor volleyball match for the Waves, Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) added six kills, four blocks and pair of aces. Her career block tally of 455 sits her at No. 2 on the Waves' all-time list.

Natalie Riddering (Sacramento, Calif./El Camino Fundamental HS) paced the defense with 21 digs, while Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) distributed 52 assists on the offensive end.

The Waves quickly took control of the first set, sprinting to 3-0 advantage thanks in part to a kill and an ace courtesy of Cash. Up by four at 11-7, Pepperdine score five unanswered points to extend the lead. Dayton was unable to come up with an answer to the Waves' .371 (15-2-35) hitting percentage, and Pepperdine went on to win the opener 25-15.

Orozco was unstoppable, nailing down six kills on 13 errorless swings. At the service line, she added three aces.

After taking a 3-1 lead in set two, the Flyers were able to fight back and knot the score at 5-all. The Waves reclaimed a three point advantage, 13-10, after a Woolever ace but Dayton once again was able to even the score after a 3-0 run. Tied at 15, Pepperdine took the lead back once and for all after Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and Woolever tagged down kills on back-to-back points. Although the Flyers made a late push, Adelhelm put a stop to it with a solo block to give the Waves set point. Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) clinched the frame, 25-20, with a kill to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Although the Flyers came out of the intermission hot and led for much of the third stanza, Pepperdine fought tooth and nail to tie things up at 16-16. The teams battled back-and-forth, but Dayton was able to hold on for the 25-21 victory to avoid the sweep.

The momentum carried over into set four, and the Flyers jumped out to an 8-4 advantage. The Waves never lingered far behind, but were unable to overcome the disadvantage and fell 25-21.

In the deciding set, Orozco threw the roof on to score the opening point but the Flyers blocked a ball on the next play for the sideout. Tied at three, the Flyers went on a 4-0 run to overtake the lead. Although the Waves fought back within two, Dayton continued to surge ahead and secured the match at 15-9 following a Rachel Krabacher kill.

Krabacher starred for the Flyers with a match-high 23 kills.

Although the indoor season has come to a close, the majority of the indoor squad, along with Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) return for the sand season in the spring. The Waves will look to defend their AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship on May 3-5, 2013 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
