MALIBU, Calif. – Head coach Troy Tanner completed his coaching staff for his first season with the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team, adding alum Kyle Luongo as an assistant coach. Luongo was a member of the Waves’ men’s volleyball team from 2008-10 and most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Michigan.

"I am very thankful to Troy Tanner and Dr. Steve Potts for giving me the opportunity to come back and begin working with the volleyball program,” said Luongo upon his hiring. “Pepperdine has always been home for me and it is an honor to be coming back. I look forward to representing a university that has done so much for me."

Tanner, who was hired to succeed Nina Matthies after her 31 seasons on the sidelines, first added Alex Dunphy as an assistant coach before welcoming Luongo to his support staff.

“Alex and I are thrilled to have Kyle join our staff,” said Tanner. “Kyle is a hard worker who knows the game, understands Pepperdine and brings a genuine “good vibe” to the gym and office.”

Luongo began working for the Wolverines’ women’s volleyball program as a volunteer assistant coach in May of 2013. In addition to scouting opponents, he assisted in team practices and individual training sessions, and also served as a camp director for Michigan’s summer volleyball camps.

The Wolverines finished 18-12 with Luongo on the sidelines and made their 14th overall appearance at the NCAA Tournament. Jennifer Cross, Lexi Dannemiller and Molly Toon were all awarded AVCA All-American honorable mention acclaim at the end of the season.

Prior to his stint in Ann Arbor, Luongo served as an assistant coach for both the junior varsity and varsity teams at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, Calif. He’s also lent his coaching expertise to Heritage Christian School in Granada Hills, Calif., where he was the head coach of both the boys and girls varsity programs.

Luongo’s prior collegiate coaching experience includes a one-year stop at Pierce College where he worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s team during the 2010-11 season. His primary role with the Brahmas was to train setters and oversee the offensive system.

In 2006, Luongo began his coaching career with Gold Medal Squared. As a lead camp coach, he would travel to high schools and clubs throughout the country to put on four-day volleyball camps.

Luongo has also coached at Legacy Volleyball Club, the Los Angeles Volleyball Academy and the Marv Dunphy Volleyball Camp.

As a student-athlete, Luongo was the starting setter for Pierce College from 2006-07. He led the squad to the state finals as a freshman and followed that up with a semifinal appearance during his sophomore year. He transferred to Pepperdine prior to the 2008 season. After redshirting his first year with the Waves, Luongo helped the team to the MPSF Tournament finals in 2010.

Luongo graduated from Pepperdine in 2010 with a degree in sports medicine.

Originally from Palmdale, Luongo now resides in West Hills with his wife Melissa.
