No. 5 Pepperdine Clinches First Win In Season Opener

The No. 5 Pepperdine Waves (1-0) defeated the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-1) 30-19, 30-24, and 30-20 in the second match of the 2003 Four Points Sheraton Classic Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

Senior outside hitter Katie Wilkins completed 18 kills on the night, while libero Christina Hinds accounted for 17 digs, and freshman Kristin McClune, making her collegiate debut, recorded four service aces.

"We were extremely happy and pleased with the way our players fought tonight," said head coach Nina Matthies, who recorded her 385th victory. "I am excited that our freshmen got to play and they acted like veterans tonight. It will be a joy to see how they progress over the years."

Pepperdine controlled the tempo of the game and kept a safe distance from the Eagles the majority of the way. The Waves posted a .234 hitting percentage thanks to the efforts of Lyndsey Hache' (.400, 9-3-15), Melissa Mehlhorn (.400, 4-0-10), McClune (.400, 5-1-10), and Wilkins (.300, 18-6-40). Wilkins led the attack with a match-high 22 points (a combination of kills and service aces), followed by Hache's 12-point performance, and McClune's nine points, respectively.

In the tournament's opening match on Friday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0) upset No. 10 Arizona (0-1). The Irish clinched the match (30-18, 28-30, 30-20, and 30-26) in four games.

The Waves will face Notre Dame on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a noon match between Eastern Washington and Arizona. The final session of the tournament will feature Eastern Washington against Notre Dame at 5 p.m. followed by Pepperdine and Arizona in a battle of Top 10 teams beginning at 7 p.m.
