MALIBU, Calif. – Jazmine Orozco, the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week, made a bit of program history today, becoming the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team’s first-ever NCAA Player of the Week.

Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) was selected as one of three honorees, including Kansas State’s Kaitlynn Pelger and Iowa State’s Kristen Hahn.

Pepperdine, ranked #14 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, played four matches in four days last week – three of which were against top-25 teams. The Waves fell to the current #1 team in the NCAA, UCLA, before rebounding with sweeps against #15 Florida State, #23 Ohio State and Houston.

Orozco, an outside hitter, posted kills-digs double-doubles in all three wins. She tallied a team-high 12 putaways against the Seminoles, to go along with her 10 digs. In the follow-up contest versus the Buckeyes, the junior paced the Waves in both kills and digs with 13 and 14, respectively.

During the final match of the weekend, Orozco recorded her third double-double in two days – fifth of the season and eighth of her career – against the tournament host Houston. She was credited with 14 kills and 11 digs to bring her week averages to 4.25 kill/set and 3.33 kills/set.

Orozco by far led the team in attacks, and registered nearly twice as many attempts as any other Wave. Despite the heavy work load, Orozco still managed a high hitting percentage and finished the week with a four-match clip of .330 (51 kills-15 errors-109 attacks).

The outside hitter was voted the Flo Hyman Classic Most Valuable Player. This was the third time she has been recognized during the tournament season, and was also an all-tournament selection at both the Pepperdine Asics Classic and the Rams Volleyball Classic prior to this weekend.

Pelger helped her team to a trio of wins this past week at the Golden Hurricane Classic, including two ranked matchups against then-#10 Minnesota and then-# 20 Dayton. Overall, she tallied a 4.18 kills average, 2.45 digs per set and hit at .440.

Iowa State’s Hahn recorded a season-high 26 digs as the Cyclones’ upset then-#1 Nebraska 3-1. She also plugged two assists and a service ace, helping Iowa State take out the Huskers for the first time in program history.

Although the Waves boast a league-leading 53 total WCC Player of the Week selections, the program does not have any national player of the week award winners on record.

The Waves open the conference season this Thursday, with a 6 p.m. (PT) match at #16 BYU. The team returns to Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday, when Pepperdine plays host to Portland at 1 p.m.
