Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team returned home after a four-match road trip on the 30th anniversary of the official dedication of Firestone Fieldhouse looking to get back to .500 on the season only to drop a 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-28) decision to Long Beach State Tuesday night.

Looking to play to her team's strength, Nina Matthies used 11 players throughout the entire match. For the second consecutive match it was the duo of Sophia Milo and Lecca Roberts which paced the Wave (3-5) attack as each player recorded 11 kills on the night. Freshman Julie Rubenstein checked in with nine kills, while senior Katy Daly came off the bench to log eight.

Pepperdine came out of the intermission and quickly fell behind 9-6. The Waves would cut the lead to two, 12-10, and go on a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead and seemed to be in control of the game, forcing Long Beach into a timeout. But LBSU would battle back to even the score at 17-17. Pepperdine rallied to score the next two points and held a 19-17 advantage when LBSU went on a 3-0, reclaiming the lead at 20-19. The Waves would tie the score five more times before inching ahead 28-27 on a Milo and Melissa Mehlhorn block. The Beach burned its final timeout trailing by one only to steal game three off Alexis Grimes' 10th kill of the night and a pair of Pepperdine attack errors.

Ali Daley led all players with 15 kills on 35 swings with just two errors (.371), while Erika Chindester added 13. As a team, Long Beach turned in 15.5 blocks and was led by Chidseter's nine and Nicole Vargus' six.

In game one, Pepperdine turned in more kills than the 49ers (8-3) by a 17-16 count, but committed 11errors, including 6.5 bocks by The Beach. LBSU was more efficient in its attack as well, hitting .306 in the game to the Wave's .115.

The second game was an offensive showcase as both teams hit for high percentages. The two teams battled back and fourth the majority of the way until back-to-back blocks by LBSU propelled The Beach to a 2-0 lead at the break. In the game, the 49ers hit at a .474 clip, while Pepperdine recorded 16 kills with just five errors to hit .324.

The Waves will return to action this weekend as it heads to Philadelphia, Penn., for the Sheraton Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The team will play two matches each day, against Towson and Penn on the first day and St. Francis and Canisius on day two.
