MALIBU, Calif. – This past Saturday during the final home match of the 2013 season, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team sent its seniors and head coach Nina Matthies out with a 3-2 win vs. Loyola Marymount. Sophomore setter Becca Strehlow added a little bit more icing to cake and was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for her spectacular performance, which included her first triple double.

Matthies announced last week that she would be stepping away from the indoor game after 31 seasons on the sidelines, making Saturday’s home finale her final match inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves, who were also celebrating Senior Day for  Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS), defeated crosstown rival Loyola Marymount 3-2 (28-30, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11).

Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) earned her first triple double of her career after dishing 49 assists on the offensive end, and defensively contributing 13 digs and a career-high 10 blocks.

In and of itself, the 10 blocks is a rare feat for a Pepperdine player, and the stat ranks tied for sixth in the Waves' record book  for single match achievements (rally scoring era only).

Strehlow is just the 10th Pepperdine player since the rally scoring era started in 2001 to reach double figures in blocks in a single match, and the only setter in a list dominated by middle blockers.

All in all, her accomplishment on Saturday is incredibly rare and is just the third triple-double on the books for the Waves since 2006. Woolever was the last Pepperdine player to do so in 2012, while Kiah Fiers did so in 2006. Woolever and Fiers, both setters, accomplished their triple-doubles by way of kills, digs and assists.

Strehlow added four kills and an ace for a season-best 10.5 points against the Lions.

The Waves finish up the regular season this week with road matches at San Francisco (11/21) and Santa Clara (11/23).
