Four Honored on WCC All-Conference Team
Samantha Cash earns All-WCC first team nod for the second time in her career.
Nov. 26, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced its postseason award winners today, and four members of the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team picked up awards. Samantha Cash was voted an All-WCC First Team selection, while Jillian Bergeson snagged a spot on the all-freshman squad. Additionally, Becca Strehlow and Katie Messing were All-WCC Honorable Mention selections.
Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) earned her second mention on the first-time roster after winning WCC Freshman of the Year accolades and first-team honors in 2011.
This season, the junior middle blocker averaged 1.31 blocks per set, which ranked 38th in the NCAA and second all-time in the Waves’ single season (rally scoring era) record book. Offensively, Cash hit for a .337 (208 kills-55 errors-454 attempts) attack percentage, good enough for 10th in single-season history.
Compared to conference foes, Cash’s blocks average ranked third, while her hitting percentage rated fourth.
Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS), who came to Pepperdine as an outside hitter, transition to the libero position just a few short weeks into the season. The freshman picked up at least 10 digs in every start at libero, including eight matches in which she surpassed the 20-digs mark.
Her season average of 3.56 digs per set ranked seventh in the league this season, while ranking eighth all-time in the Waves’ single-season record book.
Cash is the 65th Wave to ever earn a spot on the first-team roster since the inaugural All-West Coast Conference team was announced in 1985. Bergeson is the 14th Pepperdine rookie to be awarded all-freshman status, which was initially given out by the WCC in 2005.
Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) both claimed spots on the honorable mention squad.
Messing, a junior outside hitter, was the Waves’ go-to offensive weapon this season, and led the squad and ranked seventh in the conference with 3.54 kills per set. On the defensive side, Messing accounted for 2.25 digs per set and ranked second on the team with seven kills-digs double doubles.
In her first season with the Waves, Strehlow quarterbacked the offense with 10.25 assists per set which resulted in a .243 team hitting percentage – fourth in the league.
The all-around threat also provided 1.04 kills, 2.79 digs and 0.90 blocks.
In the final home match of the season, Strehlow impressed with her first-ever triple double which included 49 assists, 13 digs and 10 blocks. She was later rewarded with the team’s only West Coast Conference Player of the Week honor.
Pepperdine finished the regular season with a 15-11 record, including a fourth-place 9-9 tally in league play. The 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced live on ESPNU on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. (PT)
