Nickname: The Waves
Pepperdine was the "Waves" from the beginning, as shown from the first Pepperdine-student newspaper in September of 1937 (see below).
"Yet another element of school identification was the adoption of the name 'Waves' for the athletic teams. (President) Baxter observed that many schools had named their teams for various animals, and suggested that 'Waves' would be a good variant for Pepperdine to adopt. Although the school was several miles from the ocean (in 1937), the name found instant favor and has characterized Pepperdine athletic teams ever since." (Crest of a Golden Wave, 1987).
